The chain of lagoons in the vicinity of Wustrow includes Saaler Bodden, Permin, Koppelstrom, Bodstedter Bodden, Barther Bodden and Grabow, going from west to east. This lagoon system covers an area of over 200 square kilometres, is bounded by approx. 200 km of shoreline and is characterised by low salinity that increases towards the east. The brackish bodden waters support more than 40 different fish species, including eel, perch and zander. Extensive reed beds line the bodden shorelines. Common reed plants grow in dense stands creating ideal habitats for warblers, redshanks, black-tailed godwits and many other bird species.
